Since 2002, TouchWood has designed, manufactured and installed bespoke timber playgrounds. Safety is considered throughout each project, from design and material checks to installation, independent inspection and handover.
Our expert design and build teams work together to create play spaces that encourage children to explore, move and take on appropriate challenges, with a clear process for quality checks and ongoing care.
Play should give children opportunities to explore, develop physical skills and solve problems. We design for managed risk, balancing challenge and adventure with appropriate safety measures.
Every playground is different. Our team considers the site, intended users, equipment and surfacing when developing a design and planning its installation.
Playground equipment and surfacing are covered by separate standards. BS EN 1176 relates to playground equipment, while BS EN 1177 covers test methods for impact-attenuating playground surfacing.
We work with independent safety inspectors and RoSPA to assess completed play areas against the relevant requirements for the equipment and surfacing in each project. At completion, you receive a detailed compliance report.
Each TouchWood playground receives an accessibility and inclusivity assessment by our independent consultant. This considers how children with different needs can access the play space, take part in different activities and enjoy an appropriate level of challenge.
The aim is to create opportunities for children to explore and play together, with a range of ways to join in.
Our design, manufacturing and project management teams work closely throughout each project. Digital and physical checks help review the design, and materials are inspected before construction begins.
Our dedicated indoor manufacturing facility, equipped with specialist machinery, allows us to manufacture bespoke play equipment throughout the year. Before handover, we check that the completed structure is sound.
At handover, you receive warranty information and an Inspection and Maintenance Manual with guidance on caring for your playground.
Our aftercare team can support you with ongoing maintenance, including annual maintenance visits, and advise on regular playground safety inspections.
TouchWood’s first playground was built in 2002 and is still standing strong! Careful design, quality materials and ongoing maintenance all play a part in helping a playground provide lasting value.
Our environmental policy also guides our work to reduce emissions, source materials locally and sustainably where possible, and meet relevant legislation.
