Festyland, a family theme park located in Normandy, France, is known for its unique 1066-era theme and recognisable park symbol, a friendly dragon donning a Viking hat.

Following the success of a previous play project, the pirate-themed Kraken Village, Festyland entrusted us once again to create an exciting new playground with bespoke aerial walkways: the Viking Village.

The Festyland team sought to enhance the existing Viking Village with an aerial walkway. This walkway, stretching between towers, would lead from their dinosaur area and curve around the Viking Village.

Building on our established relationship, we designed the Viking Village to captivate young adventurers and bring the rich history of the Vikings to life. Our team combined imaginative play structures with historical elements to deliver a playground that promises both fun and educational value.

To bring this to life, we installed:

• 15m-long rope aerial walkway bridges • Towers with Viking and dinosaur theming

• Three different types of bridges to provide three different play experiences

The design also incorporated numerous viewpoints and a large Viking church-inspired structure with a bespoke tube slide.

Creative Solutions.

To withstand the immense weight of the long bridges, we used bespoke steel structural brackets. We designed a staircase in the Viking church tower to allow easy access for all ages and a range of abilities.

For the visitors to enjoy the towers even from ground level, the design was themed to match both the Dinosaur Valley, where one tower sits, and the Viking Village, where most of the walkway and towers reside.

The aerial walkways were carefully positioned to thread between trees, existing equipment and infrastructure. The massive forces that the 15m bridges exerted resulted in a huge structural engineering challenge, leading us to design and fabricate bespoke steel brackets and develop new manufacturing methods.

As well as the aerial walkway, we also improved our previously installed the Kraken Village play area at Festyland with the biggest bespoke tube slide we have ever constructed!

The project was a huge success, enhancing the Viking Village’s appeal and providing a unique and engaging experience for Festyland’s visitors.
