Diversification to drive visitor numbers - Harewood House

Set within the sweeping grounds of Harewood House in West Yorkshire, an exciting transformation was quietly taking shape. As part of a broader redevelopment, including the creation of a new low-carbon Bakehouse visitor centre, the Harewood House Trust envisioned a completely reimagined children’s playground. Their aim was to provide a rich, inclusive play experience that celebrated the estate’s natural beauty, wildlife and heritage, while drawing families deeper into the heart of the site.

TouchWood Play was brought on board to bring this vision to life.

A playful welcome to Harewood

The new playground was carefully positioned beside the site of the re-developing Bakehouse and near the site’s new entrance, placing play right at the beginning of every visitor’s journey. The client wanted the space to feel natural and timeless, with structures that would nestle comfortably within the woodland edge and reflect the estate’s historic architecture and environmental ethos.

The previous playground had reached the end of its life, so TouchWood set out to create something entirely new; more compact, more imaginative and much more inclusive. Targeting children aged 2 to 12, the new play space needed to offer challenge and joy in equal measure, with opportunities for all children, regardless of ability.
