Elevating a retail space to boost F&B

When the owners of the Mall at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol sought to revamp their play area with sustainability in mind, they turned to TouchWood Play.

The aim was to create a space that seamlessly blended with the natural surroundings while providing a fulfilling experience for the thousands of weekly visitors.

We embraced the challenge by prioritising a connection with nature and a sense of adventure. The existing landscape, with its lush vegetation, provided a perfect canvas for our design.

To create the centrepieces, we went on a major search around Bristol for hardwood trees that had fallen during the winter storms. It took 6 months and we found 3 oak trees and turned them into interesting and exciting play features. Giant climbing trees, giant oak acorns and a 4-metre-high partially hollowed-out oak tree were just some of the features specially created for this busy centre.

Our response.

The resulting playground boasts various features tailored to engage visitors of all ages. Among them are:

  • Adventure Tower: A focal point for young adventurers to climb and explore.
  • Climbing Trees and Timber Tangle: Natural elements integrated for physical play and sensory stimulation.
  • Tree Biscuits and Rope Bridges: Adding an element of challenge and excitement amidst the greenery.
  • Carved Eggs and Hexagonal Shelter: Unique swing designs that blend harmoniously with the surroundings.
  • Log Seats and Boulder Table: Providing resting spots for tired explorers and opportunities for social interaction.
