Creating natural play spaces that inspire

Natural outdoor playgrounds give kids the chance to connect with nature while having loads of fun. Studies show that playing outside can reduce stress, boost focus and fuel creativity. Instead of the usual plastic and metal structures, natural play spaces use materials like wood, sand and stone to create exciting and engaging environments. With smart designs and sustainable materials, these playgrounds encourage curiosity, exploration and adventure. The use of different natural materials offers more sensory stimulation and opportunities for children to use their imaginations in their play. Popular natural playground features

A great natural playground has plenty of features that get kids moving, thinking and using their imagination. Here are some favourites:

  • Wooden climbing structures – These build children’s balance, coordination and strength, all while enjoying the feel of real wood. Our timber climbing frames fit beautifully into outdoor settings, making them a great choice for schools, attractions and parks.
  • Nature trails – Stepping stones, logs and pathways create an interactive space where kids can explore and connect with their surroundings. Whether they’re ‘going on a bear hunt’ or pretending to be pirates in search of buried treasure, the simplest of structures can provide enormous play value.
  • Water play areas – Water features like hand pumps, sluice gates and channels give kids hands-on learning experiences while encouraging creative problem-solving. They also help little ones stay cool when playing outside in the summer, or in hot climates. While larger playground structures are not generally accessible for babies and younger toddlers, a safe water play area can help engage the youngest explorers (under direct supervision), with invaluable sensory play.
  • Play kitchens – A must-have for imaginative play, play kitchens let kids get their hands dirty while developing social and teamwork skills. They say that the mud will wash off but the learning sticks, so the muddier the better, we say!
  • Exploration table – Complete with magnifying glass, features like this encourage children to get up close and personal with nature; gathering, categorising, investigating and questioning the world around them. The learning benefits are boundless, as well as encouraging social play.

Features like these all come together to create a fun, engaging play environment where children can explore, learn and burn off energy!

Sustainable and eco-friendly materials

Sustainability is a big part of natural playground design. Using eco-friendly materials benefits the environment while creating beautiful, long-lasting play areas. Some great options include:

  • Surfacing – We prefer to use natural surfacing such as sand, bark and pea gravel in our play spaces. We find that these loose surfaces can be collected, sorted, bartered for and shared among children, to encourage communication and another dimension of play. When combined with pulleys or chutes, the possibilities for play are endless.
  • Glacial boulders – Sourced from quarries local to our project site, we use a variety of rock, from granite to slate. We find glacial boulders are perfect for building and are smoother and safer for users. They are obviously very durable and long-lasting, and add contrasting texture and colour to the play environment.
  • Locally sourced timber – We aim to source our hardwoods, such as oak and sweet chestnut, from within a 50-mile radius of our woodyard, and find naturally felled trees where possible. Oak sleepers are sourced from managed British woodlands.

A TouchWood Play playground has sustainability at its heart. We strive to use materials as close to their natural form as possible.

Making playgrounds unique with custom designs

No two playgrounds should be the same! Custom designs help create spaces that fit the needs of a school, community or business. Some fun ways to personalise a playground include:

  • Theming – Whether it’s a jungle adventure, a giant dragon, a whole Viking village or a tree of life, themed designs make playtime even more exciting and can create an iconic centrepiece for an attraction and instagrammable moments for visitors.
  • Interactive features – Storytelling elements, carved wood and interactive sculptures add a special touch. They encourage children to engage with each other and help parents get involved in their children’s play.
  • Community involvement – Getting local artists, school children or residents involved in the design and build process creates a real sense of pride and ownership. As part of our packages, we run ‘Designing for Real’ and ‘Building for Real’ workshops, which allow stakeholders to have a meaningful influence on the initial design, and contribute, in some form, to the actual build.

With a personalised approach, we make sure every playground is a perfect fit for its space and community.

Keeping natural playgrounds safe and long-lasting

To keep natural playgrounds in great shape for years, regular maintenance is key. Here’s how we make sure they stay safe and durable:

  • Material selection – We use naturally tough timber and hardwoods like Robinia, Oak and Sweet Chestnut, which resist rot and don’t need harsh chemicals to prolong their life.
  • Weather-proof fixings – Stainless steel bolts and fasteners prevent rust and keep structures sturdy.
  • Regular inspections – Routine safety checks help catch small issues before they turn into bigger, more costly problems.
