Bespoke Playground Design for Your Community

No two communities are the same. So no two TouchWood playgrounds need to be the same.

We design each project from scratch. First, we take time to understand the location, the age groups you need to serve and the kinds of play you want to encourage. We also consider the character of the surrounding area.

That could mean adventurous climbing towers, sensory play with sand and water, quieter areas or social spaces. Local landmarks and stories can inspire the design too. Our focus is on rich, open-ended play that encourages children to move, explore, imagine and interact.

Community input can form part of the process. Through our Designing for Real Workshops, children, parents and local residents can help develop ideas for their new play space. This can give project teams useful insight while helping the finished playground feel rooted in its community.

Natural Playgrounds Made for Public Spaces

Playgrounds for parks have to balance creativity with practical demands. Play equipment needs to be durable and maintainable. It also needs enough variety and challenge to make children want to return.

We work primarily with natural materials and durable timbers. Our range of playground equipment includes opportunities for climbing, balancing, swinging, imaginative play and physical challenge. Instead of starting with a standard catalogue layout, we respond to your site, landscape and local character.

Familiar play experiences can also become part of a distinctive bespoke design. Our playground swings, for example, can be incorporated alongside more adventurous and exploratory elements to create varied play for different ages and abilities.

South Molton Central Park shows how that approach can work. TouchWood designed bespoke play for younger children alongside a callisthenics area for older users. Details within the playground were inspired by local architecture, while community research helped shape the final design.

Safety, Inspection and Long-Term Value

Safety is considered throughout the design and construction process. Our team works with independent play safety inspectors, including RoSPA Play Safety. Projects are assessed against the relevant BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177 standards.

At handover, clients receive inspection and maintenance information for their installed equipment. We also offer ongoing aftercare and maintenance support.

Thinking about wear, materials, inspection and maintenance from the start matters. A well-designed public play space needs to keep serving its community long after opening day.
